Leagues across the globe are shifting their stance on Cannabis. In the last two years, we’ve seen a steady adoption of new policies as well as the progression of CBD sponsorship in sport.
On June 22nd, 2022 the MLB officially welcomed CBD sponsorship into professional baseball. Provisions include that any and all partners are certified by the NSF, a global health and safety organization, to ensure products do not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound found in Cannabis.
While all other North American Leagues have prohibited CBD sponsorship, the MLB looks to pitch a changeup, providing new opportunities for cannabis companies to market, engage and spread education. The decision was first reported by the Sports Business Journal.
Earlier this year, Ultimate Disc made history as the first Sport to feature a cannabis logo on a Professional Sports Team Uniform. Athlete testing policies have also changed as major sporting leagues like the NBA have passed on testing for cannabis entirely.
Despite the changes, the plant is still layered in stigma, and major sporting leagues are reluctant to open their arms entirely to the whole plant. Athletes are hoping this change will spark a domino effect with other leagues following soon.
