Tammy Pettigrew

“Hello, I’m Tammy, also known as the Cannabis Cutie. As a cannabis educator, advocate, mother, host, and overall personality, my mission is to provide people with valuable information to enhance their lives. My expertise in cannabis includes specializing in the science behind the plant, cannabis law, its rich history, and current events.

I’ve authored a few ebooks, like; “Bless the Blunt” and created an advocacy ebook along with a comprehensive cannabinoids guide. These educational products offer diverse insights into the multifaceted world of cannabis.”

Jay Morzaria

For every individual I’ve connected with there’s a personal journey that made them pivot into the cannabis industry, what was that for you?

Tammy Pettigrew

“As a lifelong athlete and dedicated student who abstained from alcohol and smoking throughout high school, my journey took an unexpected turn when I entered college. Opting not to pursue sports but instead focusing on sports-related studies, I encountered my first academic setback, resulting in a 0.87 GPA – a significant departure from my previous academic achievements.

At that moment of failure, I was propelled into the exploration of cannabis for the first time. Surprisingly, the person on my floor who excelled academically happened to be the resident cannabis enthusiast. This revelation became my ‘aha’ moment, challenging preconceived notions about the plant.”

When did the cannabis, health and wellness conversation click for you?

Tammy Pettigrew

“Discovering the benefits of cannabis came to me during my tenure as an NFL wife. Dealing with various aches, pains, headaches, and struggles with sleep and appetite, I became a conscious cannabis consumer. At that time, I wasn’t well-versed in the scientific intricacies or the overall health advantages of cannabis. However, I was keenly aware that it was making a tangible difference in my well-being.

This realization prompted me to step into the realm of sports advocacy, primarily focusing on fellow wives in the sports community. As they began to witness the positive effects on me, they, in turn, shared this valuable information with their spouses. This marked the inception of my understanding that cannabis could genuinely be a game-changer for athletes.”

When did you realize cannabis could play a pivotal role in your life?

Tammy Pettigrew

“I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a condition that often takes an extended period to diagnose due to the necessity of observing bone fusion. Some doctors may diagnose the condition before fusion occurs, but in my case, it wasn’t confirmed until fusion began in my pelvis and hips. This was the reality I was grappling with.  During a conversation with my mom, she questioned whether we should be exploring other avenues for assistance. However, looking back, cannabis was a modality that provided significant relief even before the official diagnosis.

It played a pivotal role in alleviating the pain and fatigue that plagued me. Everything I experienced before diagnosis, from relentless pain to constant fatigue, had roots in this condition that my body had been silently dealing with all along.  Looking ahead, I anticipate incorporating pharmaceuticals to manage my condition, but cannabis will remain my primary form of medicine. I’m committed to playing my part by focusing on what I can control—maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, ensuring adequate water intake, and, when necessary, judiciously utilizing pharmaceutical interventions, but Cannabis will continue to play a crucial role in my journey.  Looking back, that was the pivotal moment that led me to become an advocate for this plant and pushed me to passionately share my experiences and insights.”

You’ve had the unique opportunity of living with a professional athlete.  What individuals seldom hear is the other half of the story, the impact a professional career filled with blanket pharmaceutical solutions can have on a family.  Do you believe sports leagues are doing enough to tackle alternative healing, and what needs to change?

Tammy Pettigrew

“Reflecting on how it impacted my family, it was quite a challenge. After each game, players typically have their prescribed medicine in their locker, often pain medication. My ex-husband would come home with these medications neatly tucked in envelopes in his pocket. This was before the era of sideline tablets for reviewing game footage, so our version of film analysis involved me recording it on the DVR, and him later watching the game, dissecting his plays.

It was during these post-game moments that the darker side emerged – sometimes, he would inadvertently fall asleep, and those pill-filled envelopes would find their way onto the floor, posing a risk with our children walking around. The situation felt like a pill mill, and the limited options for pain management and anti-inflammatories didn’t sit well with everyone. Especially for those with a prolonged career, spanning perhaps 12 years, relying on these medications was not a sustainable solution for the body.

I strongly believe that the NFL should explore more comprehensive approaches, delving into natural remedies for players. Considering the toll these medications take over time, it’s crucial to equip athletes with knowledge about alternative solutions. If they can integrate these insights during their playing careers, it could significantly enhance their quality of life post-retirement. Ultimately, this shift in approach would not only benefit the players but also their families, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable path beyond the gridiron.”

In recent years we’ve seen the NFL awarded $1 Million for studies investigating the effects of cannabinoids on elite football athletes, unfortunately, the process has been slow and little information has been shared.  Do you think this is enough and or believe the road is clearing?

Tammy Pettigrew

“The dollar amount left me confused. Considering that the NFL stands as a billion-dollar powerhouse, one of the most influential organizations globally, that mere million seemed rather disheartening. We require a bare minimum of 10 million – for the science, the research, the product development, and most importantly, for high-quality studies.

The lack of substantial progress doesn’t surprise me; there’s a substantial need for genuine investment. I sincerely hope the league takes a serious and committed approach to this matter. It’s unclear what catalyst will prompt them to recognize the potent potential of this plant and how it could profoundly benefit their entire organization.”

Today, you’re a leading content creator, how does cannabis help you and where do you find it’s most effective for recovery and relief?

Tammy Pettigrew

It plays a pivotal role in numerous aspects of my life. Cannabis grounds my spirit, fuels hope, and keeps me open to change, growth, and new experiences. On another front, it has been a constant companion throughout my life battle against an autoimmune disorder. When my body triggers an inflammatory response, it tends to generate new bone as a self-healing mechanism. The process is far from painless. Cannabis steps in to alleviate the discomfort, allowing me to manage the pain, maintain a positive mindset, and navigate through the challenges of illness.

In essence, cannabis serves as the guiding light that keeps me resilient and optimistic amid the struggles I face. It’s not just a remedy; it’s an integral part of my journey towards maintaining a sense of inner brightness.”

What is your favourite compound or terpene and why?

Tammy Pettigrew

“My preferred compound is THC, primarily for its remarkable effectiveness in managing pain. As for terpenes, I gravitate towards those with a gassy or sweet aroma. I’ve noticed these terpenes have a profound calming effect on me, fostering creativity and an overall sense of well-being. It’s like a signal that I can tackle the day, that I can endure whatever comes my way.

Interestingly, I’ve learned to steer clear of citrusy terpenes due to some peculiar reactions, ranging from occasional discomfort to headaches. It’s a reminder that, just like any medicine, this plant comes with its own set of effects, and what works well for one person might not for another. Personally, I find comfort in strains labelled OG, gelato, or runt, steering clear of anything sour or citrusy.

While acknowledging these nuances, it’s essential to underline that the side effects of cannabis are incomparable to those of pharmaceuticals. Navigating my health journey, I’ve come to appreciate the balance that cannabis provides, offering relief without the harsh repercussions often associated with pharmaceutical interventions.”

You’ve cultivated a unique media platform, talk to us about your mission and movement.

Tammy Pettigrew

“My mission centers around empowering people to enhance their lives. I firmly believe that with the right information, individuals can make informed decisions, leading to better outcomes. What sets me apart is that I’ve immersed myself in a wealth of knowledge, and I view it as a responsibility to share this information.

This plant is intricately designed for our bodies, offering substantial benefits that many are unaware of. I’m driven to shed light on this fact because not enough people realize the inherent potential for healing within the biology of cannabis.

Athletes, who rely on their bodies for their livelihood, stand out as a crucial group that needs this knowledge. Their physical well-being is paramount, and understanding the therapeutic aspects of cannabis can be transformative. It is essential to focus on this aspect and bring attention to how this plant can play a pivotal role in optimizing the health and performance of athletes.”

Education is paramount, for Sports Cannabis, it’s our driving force for change.  You’ve created the Higher Learning Book Club and Bless the Blunt eBook.  Why was it essential for you to focus and create educational content for the cannabis community?

Tammy Pettigrew

“The inception of the book club took place during the pandemic when many of us found ourselves at home, grappling with the creation of new, not-so-healthy habits. I intended to guide people toward cultivating a positive routine, especially during those challenging times. I thought, “Why not share this experience with others who crave more substantial and meaningful content?”

Having a collection of cannabis books waiting to be explored, the idea quickly transformed into an engaging and enjoyable endeavour. Witnessing individuals come out of their cannabis closet and transition into advocates within their local communities, particularly in places like Texas or North Carolina, has been truly gratifying.”

Recently you have released the Lasgna Ganja Podcast with rap legend Xzibit, which is making waves across North America.  How did the show come to fruition?

Tammy Pettigrew

“I received an email from Xzibit suggesting a phone call, and after a few prior encounters through mutual connections in the industry, we connected. During our call, Xzibit pitched the idea of a podcast, expressing his desire to offer a more informative and layered perspective compared to the other podcasts out there centered on casual conversations and drinking.

This vision birthed “Lasagna Ganja,” a podcast aimed at providing valuable information and exploring the diverse layers of the cannabis industry. Despite the name, it’s not about food; instead, we delve into various aspects like retail management, marketing, entertainment, music, sports, and cooking. Collaborating with Xzibit has been a blast; he brings humour to the table, making our time on set enjoyable. Together, we’re committed to delivering insightful content and having a great time doing it. That’s the story behind how “Lasagna Ganja” came to be.”

What’s the biggest misconception about cannabis in your eyes?

Tammy Pettigrew

“The misconceptions surrounding cannabis are just baffling. It’s like, I don’t even know where to begin anymore. There was a time when the stereotype was that anyone using cannabis was a lazy stoner destined for nothing. Then, we witness someone like Sha’Carri Richardson facing criticism for having THC in her system, with the absurd claim that it provides an unfair advantage. So, I’d assert that the most persistent misconception to date is that this plant remains profoundly misunderstood.

Contrary to the stereotype of athletes just wanting to lounge around getting high, the reality is far from it. These athletes are dealing with a myriad of challenges off the field—marriages, children, families, and the usual ups and downs of life. Sometimes, they turn to cannabis to manage anxiety, sadness, anger, or whatever emotional turmoil they’re dealing with. It’s essential to remember that athletes are human too, and yes, they absolutely, unequivocally need something like cannabis in their lives. It’s not just about recreation; it’s about addressing the genuine complexities of being a person, even if you happen to be an athlete.”

Jay Morzaria

How can we as a community collectively change the narrative and break the stigma?

Tammy Pettigrew

“Collaboration is key; it has to be a collective, team effort. Our common adversary is the prohibitionist – be it lobbyists, MSOs, or governments. To make progress, we must unite, pool our resources and leverage our platforms.  The plan needs a collaborative push to truly move the needle forward. We all need to work together; otherwise, our efforts won’t yield substantial progress.”

Jay Morzaria

Looking forward, where would you like to see the Cannabis industry in the next 2-3 years?

Tammy Pettigrew

“In the next one to three years, addressing the nationwide tax issue in the cannabis industry is a top priority for me. The current situation doesn’t add up – we’re essentially in business to contribute to government revenue, and that needs reevaluation. I’d like to witness changes in this aspect.

There’s a crucial need for a broader understanding of Cannabis. Unlike lab-created substances like alcohol, we can’t apply exorbitant pricing and taxes indiscriminately. Recognizing the variability in crop yields from year to year, akin to tomatoes or corn, is essential. It’s a long shot, maybe a 50-year concept, but I’d love to see a shift in this perspective.

Additionally, a pressing issue close to my heart is the release of individuals incarcerated for cannabis-related offences in 2024. It’s time to address the injustice and provide these individuals with a chance at redemption and a fresh start.”

Jay Morzaria

For others following in your footsteps, what advice would you give to them?

Tammy Pettigrew

“Authenticity is key. It’s the simplest and most effective way to reach your goals. Trying to be something you’re not will inevitably lead to burnout, hindering your progress. So, just be yourself and fully commit to it. People resonate with genuine individuals, especially in a digital landscape where authenticity is sought after. Your true self shines through on-screen, creating a connection that people genuinely appreciate.

In a world saturated with identical trends and seemingly uniform content, don’t be afraid to stand out. Embrace your uniqueness and let it set you apart. That’s the best advice I can offer in navigating a landscape where originality is a precious commodity.”
